Lomax is the Prizefighter Welterweights Champion - 24/10/2008
MICHAEL Lomax is the Prizefighter Welterweights Champion.Chingford-based Lomax triumped after a superb final to claim a split decision victory over fellow Londoner Ted Bami.
One judge had Bami winning by 29-28 but the other two went in favour of Lomax – by 30-27 and 29-28 margins.
Lomax, who represented England at amateur level, collected £25,000 for this tournament victory and could now be pushing toward a shot at a title.
In a thrilling night of boxing at the York Hall in London, Bami and Lomax were the last two fighters left.
Bami, the former European Light-Welterweight title holder, reached the final thanks to a first round of stoppage over Andrew Ferrans and then a comfortable points triumph over Mark Lloyd.
Lomax’s progress to the final had been a lot more hard-fought as he secured a points victory over Craig Dickson but was left with two nasty cuts, one on his forehead, the other over his ear.
But he had recovered well enough to keep fighting and claimed a split decision – the only one of the night so far – to defeat Nigel Wright in the semi-final.
In the other fights of the night, Lloyd defeated Steve Conway on points in his quarter-final and Wright gained a similar triumph over Ross Minter.
